Kachalu, the word meaning "hope" is an organization formed to produce high end coffee within the strictest environmental standards. The group farms 68 hectares between 14 families. Since 2007 they have been making huge improvements, making it onto the SCAA top 15 coffees list. Grupo Kachalu is a member of the Rainforest Alliance. The Kachalu farms surround a forest preserve that is managed by the Fundacion Natura and is a last haven of an endagered species of Andean oak. In 2004 studies done by the National Coffee Research Center found 96 different bird species which they attribute to the diversity of native shade trees such as ficus, cedars, ingas and others.
